Steelwater Gun Safes

So, there is a long-running quote that reads, “Seeing is believing.” Hang on! But, looks can be deceptive too. Frankly speaking, I have seen all kinds of traditional and sophisticated safes get destroyed by culprits in the middle of an ordinary day. Yet, I sell gun safes for a living in my retail store, and I have been doing this all my life. Truthfully speaking, it’s better to have one, and not need it than to need it and not have one. After all, an unsecured gun can be easily stolen even by a 10-year old. And, if the gun is used for violent crimes, you could be roped in for a criminal investigation. Simply put, a gun safe is a necessary evil in the modern age and time.

Top Gun Safes by Steelwater

I can go to any lengths and expense to discuss gun safes, but it will prove to be a long read. So, I will cut the chase and introduce you to one of the top selling gun safe company that has been the poster boy of the gun safe industry for a while. If you haven’t heard about Steelwater gun safes before, here’s a formal introduction about the company. Located in South Carolina, the company has been around for several years and beyond. They have a good selection of gun safes, and they have reached a stage where their brand speaks for itself. They are well-known in the industry for offering high-quality gun safes at a reasonable price-point. Furthermore, the company stands behind its products. All their gun safes come with a lifetime warranty. Having said that, let’s check out their highest-rated gun safes.

  1. Steelwater Standard Duty 16 Long Gun Fire Protection for 60 Minutes AMEGS592216-BLK and Steelwater Heavy Duty 16 Long Gun Fire Protection for 60 Minutes AMSW592216-BLK

If you get any of these gun safes, you will be able to store a bunch of long guns in them. As you can see from the model name both these gun safes can store 16 long guns. Actually this is a marketing move, because you will hardly fit 10 long guns into it. If you have more guns, look below for bigger models.

Both safes arrive with EMP Protected Digital/Mechanical Lock for added security. Better yet, their fire-enduring construction can keep the safe immune from fire damage for a good 60-minutes. The fully carpeted interior is another plus point of these gun safes. As far as the construction goes, the Steelwater Standard Duty model has a 14-gauge steel body and door. On the other hand, the Steelwater Heavy Duty has a 12-gauge steel body. For those who don’t know, the smaller the gauge, the stronger is the body. That being said, even with sophisticated tools, it’s difficult to break in a safe with 12 or 14-gauge steel.

The Heavy duty model has a Gear drive linkage system which is missing in the Standard Duty model. Gear drives ensure smoother operation when a safe is opened or closed. The 8X larger drill resistant hard plate is another noticeable upgrade in the AMSW592216. Compared to (4) standard bolt down holes, the AMSW592216 model has (4) ¼” steel reinforced bolt down holes. Also, the Heavy duty model carries a stylish Tri-Spoke handle and not a straight handle. Furthermore, I also noticed that it has decorative external hinges and not your regular external hinges.

Steelwater digital lock

Both models come with digital lock with polished chrome digital keyboard. It requires 9-volt battery to work. One emergency bypass key is included, but you can order more at the time of safe purchase. Another nice feature that both safes have is automatic interior LED lights which turn on when the door is opened and shuts off when it is closed.

As such, both the Steelwater gun safes have received glowing reviews from customers, but the AMSW592216 model is a cut above the scope. It has several remarkable upgrades over the Standard Duty model. Given all the added features, one will have to spend a bit more for the Steelwater Heavy Duty 16 Long gun safe.  Those on a limited budget can still consider the Steelwater Standard Duty one.

  1. Steelwater Standard Duty 20 Long Gun Fire Protection for 60 Minutes AMEGS592818-BLK and Steelwater Heavy Duty 20 Long Gun Fire Protection for 60 Minutes AMSW592818-BLK

The standard features of these safe include EMP Protected Digital/Mechanical Lock, 60 Min @ 1875° Fire Protection, interior lights, and a solid body with an inside space to hold 20 long guns. The Steelwater Heavy Duty gun safe is an obvious upgrade. It has a heavy-duty frame as opposed to the standard frame. Other than this, the Heavy Duty safe has 12-gauge steel body/door, gear drive linkage system, eight times larger drill resistant plate, (4) ¼” steel reinforced bolt down holes, decorative external hinges, and a tri-spoke handle. Given all these upgrades, the Steelwater Heavy Duty 20 Long Gun safe offers great value for one’s money.

This isn’t to say that getting the Steelwater Standard Duty AMEGS592818-BLK gun safe will prove to be a money pothole. This safe has also received a ton of positive reviews, and it’s priced in accordance with its features. So, one will have to spend less to acquire the AMEGS592818-BLK safe. Of course, if you have an appropriate budget for the upgraded model, you are better off with the Steelwater Standard Duty 20 long gun safe. It’s undoubtedly one of the best gun safes out there on the market today. Personally, I found this safe not only visually appealing but also extremely safe and sound from the inside-out. If you are ordering this one, have at least two people for assistance.

To summarize: although this safe is made in China, but it is very good. It’s heavy – you don’t need to bolt it to the ground because anyone will hardly pick it up and walk with it even it is empty (it weighs 453 lbs). Also I should note that Steelwater customer service is top notch!

  1. Steelwater Heavy Duty 39 Long Gun Fire Protection for 60 Minutes AMLD593924-BLK and Steelwater Extreme Duty 39 Long Gun Fire Protection for 120 Minutes AMHD593924-BLK

If you want to store a world of guns in a safe, both these safes are your best bet. Yes, these safes can hold 39 long guns. When I am using them to store small pistols and handguns, I can store so much more. Both the safes have nice interiors, and they lit up once the safe is opened. Other common features include gear drive linkage systems, double steel reinforced top shelf, and heat resistant door seal to keep heat and smoke at bay. As such, there is a price gap of hundreds of dollars between the two safes. What you get for the extra cost associated with the Extreme Duty AMHD593924-BLK model is a bunch of added features for peace of mind.

While the Steelwater AMLD593924-BLK (Heavy Duty) gun safe can offer fire protection for 60-mins, the AMHD593924-BLK (Extreme Duty) can hold fire for double the time. Also, they are not constructed the same. If you are not familiar, 12-gauge composite door and body is a common feature with high-end gun safes. The Steelwater Heavy Duty 39 Long Gun safe has a 12-gauge door and body, but the Extreme Duty model takes security more seriously. It has a 9-gauge door and body, 18 massive locking bolts, 8X drill resistant hard plate, re-locking device, and an extra plate on the entire door along with gear drive system to make break-in an impossible feat.

Steelwater gun safe power and usb outlets

Nice feature is that Steelwater safes have power and usb outlets inside of it. You don’t have to buy and setup these accessories separately. And also the safes come with a combination lock which showed itself as very reliable and secure. But if you prefer quicker access, you may consider upgrading to Lagard (Kaba) Digital lock.

On the whole, it’s a hard-to-beat safe that can hold your guns like nothing else out there in its price range.

Both these Steelwater gun safes are built like a tank with a combination lock and key lock system. Given their size and weight, they might be a little tough to install, but it’s worth the protection they offer. Both these safes can house dozens of long guns. As a matter of fact, a decent size fridge would fit inside these safes. Between the two, there are some striking differences worth mentioning over here. As the topic hints, the Steelwater AMLD724228-BLK Heavy Duty gun safe offers fire protection for 60-minutes, and the AMHD724228 (Extreme Duty) safe offers 120-minute fire protection.
